The Story So Far

PAUL LIVINGSTON (aka FLACCO)

I have managed to eek out a living for over three decades under the guise of FLACCO whose many television credits include: GOOD NEWS WEEK, THE BIG GIG, DAAS KAPITAL, MONEY OR THE GUN, two SANDMAN AND FLACCO SPECIALS for the Ten Network and THE SIDESHOW for the ABC. Flacco was a regular on the TRIPLE J BREAKFAST program from 1994 - 97.  FLACCO has toured extensively in Australia and internationally and since 2014 as “THE GUITARIST” with Tim Ferguson and Paul McDermott in the reformed DOUG ANTHONY ALLSTARS playing to full houses and earning five star reviews in London and Edinburgh from 2014 - 2018.

I have appeared in many features, including Vincent Ward’s THE NAVIGATOR for which I was nominated for an Australian Film Institute award for best supporting actor.

My guitar playing has remained a well-kept secret over the years but after the encouraging response for my soundtrack composed for the ABC D.A.A.S documentary, TICK F***ING TOCK  an album THE TOWERS GROW DARK was released in 2018.

I have authored six books to date, including my most recent, D.A.A.S. Their Part in my Downfall. A biography/memoir of life on the road with the Allstars, published by Allen & Unwin and released in November 2016, and my well-received non-fiction memoir of my father’s wartime experiences, ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE, published by Allen & Unwin, and released in November 2013.

From 2007-2010 I was a co-writer on the animated feature film HAPPY FEET TWO (released in cinemas November 2011) creating the characters of the krill, Bill & Will voiced by Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

From 2008-2012 I joined the writing team for Network Ten’s GOOD NEWS WEEK, for which I received five AWGIE awards.

Currently I’m in the process of exhuming FLACCO for a reunion tour with THE SANDMAN.

While not pursuing all of the above I fill my time as a campanologist and a volunteer at SACRED HEART COMMUNITY PALLIATIVE CARE BIOGRAPHY SERVICE at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.

“Everyone has a story to tell, and for palliative care patients, approaching the end of their life can prompt a desire to capture important memories. Biography volunteers help capture the world as they lived it, and pass on a lasting reminder to family and friends of their loved one’s journey and experiences. From the opportunity to reflect on their life and share their story, to pass on important information and offer a tribute to loved ones – a biography brings a welcome affirmation of the value of each person’s life.”

ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. THE PRIVATE WAR OF PRIVATE STANLEY LIVINGSTON

November 2013

Absent Without Leave gives a deeply human face to the circumstances of war. Like many WWII veterans, Stanley Livingston spoke little about his time on the front lines, and this book is an attempt by his son to discover the man he had never really known. The result is an extraordinary story about an ordinary man.
